Haiping Guo

Haiping GUO (b. 1962, Nanjing, China) is a contemporary artist and a leading figure in the development of Outsider Art in China. He is the founder of the Nanjing Outsider Art Center, a pioneering platform that integrates artistic practice with mental health support and community-based rehabilitation.

GUO’s work sits at the intersection of psychology, art, and social practice. For nearly two decades, he has explored how creative expression can function as a channel for emotional processing, identity reconstruction, and social connection among individuals with mental health conditions. His approach aligns with key concerns in psychology, including non-verbal expression, trauma-informed care, and strengths-based perspectives on mental illness.

Central to his practice is the concept of “Outsider Art,” referring to work created by individuals without formal artistic training, often including those with psychiatric or developmental conditions. GUO frames these works not as clinical artifacts, but as authentic expressions of inner experience. This perspective challenges deficit-based models and instead recognizes creativity, agency, and meaning-making in populations often defined by diagnosis.

A formative aspect of his methodology emerged in 2006, when GUO spent extended time living and creating alongside psychiatric patients in institutional settings. From this experience, he developed a practice grounded in presence, co-creation, and the suspension of hierarchical roles between “therapist” and “patient.” While not positioned as formal art therapy, his work offers a parallel, practice-based model that resonates with expressive therapies and community psychology.
